The Problem

Why International Resumes
Get Ignored in Canada

Most newcomers are not rejected for lack of ability. They are screened out in the first few seconds for reasons that have nothing to do with the work. These are the six we fix most often.

It reads as foreign before anyone reads it

A photo, a date of birth, a “Curriculum Vitae” header, a declaration line. Each tells a recruiter the document was written for somewhere else, and many set it aside rather than handle details they are not allowed to ask about.

Five pages where two are expected

Job Bank, the federal government’s job site, tells job seekers to limit a resume to two pages and keep the emphasis on recent work. A long record is not the problem; the same weight on every role since 2004 is.

Your employers and titles mean nothing here

A reader in Mississauga does not know that your bank is the second largest in Nigeria or that “Deputy Manager” ran a 40-person branch. Without scale and context, strong experience looks ordinary.

Your degree has no Canadian frame

A degree from abroad needs one line that places it, usually a credential assessment, and a licensed profession needs its registration status stated plainly. Without that line, recruiters guess, and they guess low.

The ATS never saw it

Two columns, a header table and a footer of personal data are what applicant tracking systems parse worst. The resume that looks polished on your screen can arrive as a jumble on the recruiter’s.

The “Canadian experience” filter

The Ontario Human Rights Commission has said since 2013 that a strict “Canadian experience” requirement is prima facie discrimination, and since January 1, 2026, Ontario employers with 25 or more employees cannot require it in a publicly advertised job posting or application form. The filter is now illegal on paper; it still lives in the way a resume is read. We make your experience read as directly relevant, so the question never comes up.

ATS-Optimized Resume writing services

Beat the Bots

Get More Interviews with an ATS-Ready Canadian Resume

97.4% of Fortune 500 companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to screen resumes, and so do the Canadian hospital networks, banks, retailers and logistics employers newcomers apply to most. A two-column international CV with a photo, a header table and a footer of personal data is exactly what these systems parse worst. We engineer every line, keyword and layout so the software reads all of it and the person who follows sees a Canadian resume.

ATS-Optimized Layouts

One column, standard headings, no photo, no tables or text boxes, so the ATS, the recruiter and the hiring manager all read the same resume.

Keyword-Enriched Content

The Canadian job titles, tools and competencies the posting uses, in the spelling it uses, placed where the software and the reader both find them.

Before & After

We Turn an International CV Into Canadian Evidence

Most international CVs describe duties and personal details. Canadian employers hire on results they can place. We replace the lines they skim past with lines that prove something.

BeforeCurriculum Vitae. Date of birth: 12 May 1988. Nationality: Pakistani. Marital status: married. Passport no. and photo attached.
AfterName, Mississauga, ON, Canadian phone, email, LinkedIn, and one line: permanent resident, eligible to work for any employer. Nothing a Canadian employer is not allowed to ask about.
BeforeObjective: Seeking a challenging position in a reputed Canadian organization where I can utilize my skills.
AfterSenior Accountant with nine years in financial reporting and audit for listed companies. Bachelor of Commerce assessed by WES as equivalent to a Canadian bachelor’s degree. CPA Canada candidate.
BeforeDeputy Manager, [Bank], Lagos. Responsible for branch operations and staff.
AfterDeputy Branch Manager, a top-five Nigerian bank (6,000 staff). Ran a 40-person branch, grew deposits 31% in two years and cut audit exceptions to zero.
BeforeB.Tech (Hons), First Class, 2012.
AfterBachelor of Technology, Civil Engineering, [University], India, 2012. Assessed by WES as equivalent to a Canadian bachelor’s degree. EIT application with PEO in progress.
BeforeCashier, coffee shop, Brampton, 2025 to present, listed first and in full, above fifteen years of engineering.
AfterFifteen years of engineering leads the page. The current role sits in one line under Additional Experience, with the numbers that show reliability.
BeforeReferences: Mr. A. Khan, Managing Director, +92 300 000 0000. I hereby declare that the above information is true to the best of my knowledge.
AfterNo references and no declaration on the page. A separate reference sheet, ready for the interview stage, with each referee’s email and time zone.

Newcomer Resume Transformation

How We Convert Your Resume to Canadian Format

A before-and-after sample from our resume writing service for newcomers to Canada, with the details anonymized: a mechanical engineer from Pune with 12 years in plant maintenance, a two-page Indian-format CV on the left, the Canadian resume we wrote from it on the right. Same career, same person, completely transformed.

Resume writing services for newcomers to Canada: page 1 of the two-page Canadian-format resume we wrote from an Indian-format CV
AFTER
Before: page 1 of a two-page Indian-format CV with a photo, date of birth, passport number and career objective BEFORE

See the full two-page after resume →

An Indian-format CV before and the Canadian resume after our rewrite.

A Canadian Header and a Target Title

Name, city and province, a Canadian phone number and a LinkedIn URL, then the title the employer is hiring for and one line on work authorization. The photo, the date of birth, the passport number, the father’s name and the “Curriculum Vitae” header are gone.

Credentials a Recruiter Can Place

The B.E. becomes a bachelor’s degree assessed by World Education Services as a Canadian equivalent; the EIT registration and the P.Eng application in progress are stated exactly; the Canadian safety tickets earned since arriving get their own line.

Scope and Numbers From Abroad

Every role opens with the size of the plant, the team and the revenue, with rupee figures converted to Canadian dollars, so a reader in Mississauga can place a 2,100-hour downtime reduction before they read it. The Canadian contract and the volunteering lead the page under their own heading.

Industries

Newcomer Resumes for Every Industry, Including the Regulated Ones

About one in five jobs in Canada is in a regulated occupation, where an international resume needs a licensing line as well as a career story. These are the fields newcomers bring us most; see all 60+ in our resume writing services by industry.

Regulated, licence in progress

Internationally Educated Nurses

In the 2021 Census, only 36.5% of immigrants with a foreign nursing degree were working as registered nurses or in closely related roles, against 87.4% of the Canadian-educated. Your registration status, NCLEX-RN or REx-PN result and bridging program sit alongside the clinical record. See our nursing resume page.

Licensure in stages

International Medical Graduates

Residency, clinical assistant, research and non-clinical roles while you work through licensure, with your MCC exams stated exactly and your clinical scope never overstated. See our physician and surgeon resume page.

First Canadian health role

PSWs and Health Care Aides

Credentialling and exams

Allied Health and Rehabilitation

Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists and lab professionals, with your credentialling assessment and exam status placed where reviewers look first. See our allied health resume page.

Plus engineering, accounting, IT and software, skilled trades, trucking and logistics, teaching, early childhood education, hospitality and 60+ more industries across Canada.

The Craft

What a Canadian-Format Resume Looks Like

Whatever country your CV was written for, we rebuild it to the same Canadian conventions, and without the mistakes that get an international resume set aside. Two pages: a header with a Canadian phone number and a target title, a three-line profile, experience with a scope line and results under each role, education and credentials with their Canadian equivalencies, then skills, languages and the Canadian lines you have earned since arriving.

What each part of your newcomer resume has to do

  1. 01

    The Header and Profile

Name, city and province, a Canadian phone number and a LinkedIn URL, then the title the employer is hiring for, one line on work authorization and a three-line profile. No photo, no date of birth, no passport number.

  2. 02

    The Credentials Line

Your degree with its Canadian equivalency, your assessment (WES, ICAS, IQAS, ICES or CES) and your registration status, stated exactly, in the top third of page one where a recruiter looks for them.

  3. 03

    The Experience

Each role opens with a scope line, employer size, sector and country, then results with numbers, most recent first, in Canadian dollars and Canadian spelling.

  4. 04

    The Canadian Lines

Education, certifications and the lines you have earned since arriving: volunteering, a bridging program, a professional association, WHMIS or First Aid, contract or part-time work.

The Canadian resume conventions we write to

2 pg

Two pages, never five

Job Bank tells job seekers to limit a resume to two pages and to minimize roles more than 15 years old.

No

No photo, no personal details

No photo, age, date of birth, marital status, religion, nationality, passport or ID number, and never a Social Insurance Number.

Rev.

Reverse chronological

Canadian recruiters read dates first. A functional resume that hides them reads as a warning sign, even when the gap is a move across an ocean.

Cdn

A Canadian address line and number

City and province, a Canadian phone number and a Canadian time zone for calls. A foreign number at the top of the page is the fastest way to be skipped.

Dates

Month and year, Canadian spelling

January 2019 to March 2024, not 01/2019. Colour, centre, licence, and the job titles Canadian employers use, which are not always the ones you held.

Scope

Context before results

A reader cannot weigh a 31% gain without the base. Every role states the size of the employer and the team before it states what you changed.

ATS

Screened before it is read

Parsed and keyword-searched before a person opens it: one column, standard headings and the posting’s own words, as a PDF with a Word copy for portals that ask.

None

No declaration, no signature, no references

No “I hereby declare” line, no signature, no hobbies, no family details. References go on a separate sheet, provided when an employer asks.

The mistakes your newcomer resume will not make

The mistakeWhat we seeWhat yours does
1

The overseas header

A photo, a date of birth, a “Curriculum Vitae” title and a passport number before the first job.
Yours opens with a Canadian header and a target title.
2

The five-page history

Every role since 2004 at the same weight, with duties copied from old job descriptions.
Yours runs two pages, with a result on every line.
3

The survival job on page one

A warehouse or coffee shop role listed first and in full, above fifteen years in the profession.
Yours leads with the career and gives the current job one honest line.
4

The unexplained credential

“B.Sc., First Division” with no equivalency, and a licence described as held when it is in progress.
Yours states the assessment and the registration status exactly.
5

The unparseable layout

Two columns, a header table, icons and a footer of personal data that scramble in an ATS.
Yours survives the upload and reads the same to the software and the person.
Whatever country your CV was written for, your newcomer resume leads with the evidence a Canadian employer is looking for.
The question behind the question

No Canadian Experience? Here Is What Goes on the Resume Instead

“Canadian experience” is rarely about the work. It is a recruiter’s shorthand for “I cannot tell whether this person will fit, and I do not have time to find out.” The resume answers that doubt before it is spoken, with lines a Canadian reader recognizes.

What comes out
  • The photo, the date of birth, the nationality and the declaration line
  • The foreign phone number and the address abroad
  • Pages three, four and five
  • Titles that mean something different here, left untranslated
What goes in
  • A scope line for every employer: size, sector and country, so the reader can place it
  • Your credential assessment, exams passed and registration status, stated exactly
  • Canadian lines earned since arriving: volunteering, a bridging program, a professional association, WHMIS or First Aid, a provincial licence, contract or part-time work
  • The posting’s keywords, in Canadian spelling, where the ATS and the reader both find them
What stays
  • Every year of your international experience, written as results with numbers
  • Your languages, which Canadian employers in every sector value
  • Your story, told with confidence rather than apology
  • Confidential handling of every document

Whether you call it a newcomer resume, an immigrant resume or a Canadian-format resume, the answer is the same document: two pages, Canadian conventions, built for the posting in front of you.

FAQ

Newcomer Resume Writing Service Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our resume writing service for newcomers to Canada

Our newcomer resume writing starts at $99 with the Essential package, which converts your international CV into an ATS-ready, Canadian-format resume. The Premium package ($129) adds a cover letter written to your posting, and the Elite package ($199) adds the LinkedIn profile recruiters check before they call. Every package includes unlimited revisions for two weeks and the 60-day interview guarantee, at the same price every other client pays.
Use them. A free clinic at an Employment Ontario centre, a YMCA or a settlement agency will tell you what is wrong with the resume you wrote, and that advice is worth having. We write the finished document, to the postings you send us, in 2 to 3 business days, and we carry the risk with a full refund and a free rewrite if it does not land an interview in 60 days. Most newcomers who come to us have already had the free review and want the resume written.
If you have applied to more than twenty jobs without a call, usually yes. In 2021, more than a quarter of immigrants with a foreign degree were working in jobs that need a high school education or less, more than double the rate for Canadian-born graduates, and much of that gap opens at the screening stage. A $99 resume that fixes the format, the credential line and the keywords costs less than one more month in a survival job, and the 60-day guarantee keeps the risk on our side.
Two pages, reverse chronological, one column. A header with your name, city and province, Canadian phone number, email and LinkedIn URL; a target title and a three-line profile; experience with a scope line and quantified results under each role; education and credentials with Canadian equivalencies; then skills, languages and certifications. No photo, no personal details, no objective statement, no declaration and no references on the page. Written to one posting at a time and sent as a PDF unless the portal asks for Word.
By making your international experience read as directly relevant, and by adding the Canadian lines you do have. Each role gets a scope line (employer size, sector and country) and results with numbers, in the language of the posting. Then we add what you have earned since arriving: volunteering, a bridging program, a professional association, Canadian certifications such as WHMIS or First Aid, and contract or part-time work. Since January 1, 2026, Ontario employers with 25 or more employees cannot require Canadian experience in a public job posting, so the resume’s job is to make the question unnecessary.
No. Job Bank notes that a photo is not the norm in Canada, and Canadian employers do not expect age, date of birth, marital status, religion, nationality, a passport number or a Social Insurance Number. Human rights law limits what employers can ask about, and many will set aside a resume that includes those details rather than handle them. We remove them and use the space for results.
List the degree with its full name, the institution, the country and the year, then one line that places it, for example “Assessed by WES as equivalent to a Canadian bachelor’s degree, 2026.” The designated assessment services are World Education Services (WES), ICAS, IQAS, ICES and the University of Toronto’s Comparative Education Service, with separate bodies for physicians, pharmacists and architects. Put the line under Education and repeat the equivalency in your profile if the posting asks for a specific degree. No assessment yet? We write the degree clearly and let the experience carry the page.
Your exact status, in the regulator’s words: registration applied for, exams passed, a bridging program in progress, or a provisional or temporary licence. About one in five jobs in Canada is regulated, and employers in those fields read the status line first. We never describe a licence as held when it is in progress, and we show the roles you can take now, such as clinical assistant, technologist, analyst or associate positions, while you complete the process.
Yes, in one line. Leaving it off creates a gap that recruiters notice; listing it first and in full buries your profession. We lead with the career you are returning to and place the current job under Additional Experience with one or two numbers that show reliability, such as shifts covered, customers served or cash handled. It answers what you are doing now without letting it define you.
Most Canadian employers ask for two or three references at the interview stage, not with the application, so they do not belong on the resume. References from abroad are accepted; we prepare a separate sheet with each referee’s title, relationship to you, email, phone with country code and time zone. A Canadian reference from volunteering, a bridging program or a contract role is worth adding as soon as you have one.
It can draft one, and recruiters can tell. AI does not know your scope, your numbers, how your licence is actually worded or which of your results a Canadian employer cares about, and it cannot ask. It also tends to leave the foreign structure in place and polish the wording. Our writers interview you for the details, convert the document to Canadian conventions and format it for the systems that screen it, including the AI tools recruiters now use.
Your first draft arrives within 2 to 3 business days of your consultation, with a 24-hour rush available for $25 when a posting closes sooner. We work with newcomers in every province and territory, and with people who have not yet arrived, by phone, email and video, with in-person appointments at our Mississauga office. Send your current CV and a posting with your order so the first draft is already written to it.
