Our Promise

The 60-Day Interview Guarantee

Land an interview within 60 days of receiving your new resume, or we’ll give you a full refund and a free expert rewrite. It applies to every package, whether you are going back to a job or bidding on the next contract.

5 Simple Steps

How Our Self-Employed Resume Writing Service Works

Our method starts with one question, what does this posting or this bid need to see, and it is backed by our 60-day interview guarantee.

Tell Us About You

We start with the posting, the RFP or the roster you are applying to, and with how the business was set up, so the resume is written to a real reader.

Gather Your Info

We collect what the business did and for whom, your numbers, your contracts, your certifications and the tools you have actually used.

Resume Writing

A writer drafts your resume, and the cover letter and LinkedIn profile if you chose them, to the posting. Your first draft arrives within 2 to 3 business days.

Your Feedback Matters

We refine every document with you until it reads like you on your best day, with unlimited revisions for two weeks.

It’s Go Time

Apply with a resume that clears the ATS and the vendor portal and reads like you, in Word and PDF, ready for the posting or the bid in front of you.

What we ask you for

Five things, and most owners have them in an afternoon. Nothing to write; that part is ours.

1

The posting or the bid

The job ad, the RFP, the roster form or the staffing firm’s request. Two postings are fine.

2

The business

What it did, for whom, since when, sole proprietorship or corporation, and what happened to it.

3

Your numbers

Clients served, revenue band if you want it used, team size, contracts won, retention, project values.

4

Your contracts

The engagements worth naming, by client type if the client is confidential, with dates and what came of them.

5

Your tools and tickets

Software, certifications, licences, safety tickets and clearances, and when you can start.

Send what you have. Confidential clients are normal at this stage, and we ask for anything we still need.

Beat the Bots

Get More Interviews with an ATS-Ready Resume After Self-Employment

97.4% of Fortune 500 companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to screen resumes, and so do the staffing firms and the vendor portals that place and onboard contractors. The software reads “Owner, Northside Renovations Inc., 2014 to present” as one job with an unknown employer and no matching title. We engineer every line, keyword and layout so your resume is read in full by the software and by the person who follows it.

ATS-Optimized Layouts

One column, standard headings and the business as a dated entry with a real title, so the ATS, the staffing database and the hiring manager all read the same resume.

Keyword-Enriched Content

The posting’s title and the skills it names, in the posting’s words rather than your website’s, placed where the software and the reader both find them.

Gap, failed business or flight risk?

Not once the resume is written properly.

Every employer reading a self-employed resume is asking three quiet questions: what were you doing, why did it end, and will you leave. The document answers all three before the interview does.

What counts as experience
  • Every contract and every client engagement
  • Hiring, training and managing anyone at all
  • Pricing, bidding and winning the work
  • Cash flow, payroll and receivables, at whatever scale
  • The tools you bought and learned, and the tickets you kept current
What comes out
  • The CEO title on a one-person company
  • The marketing paragraph from your website
  • The client list nobody can verify
  • The years left blank because you did not know how to list them
  • Various contracts, with no dates
What stays
  • The honest structure: sole proprietorship or corporation
  • The title you actually used
  • Your numbers: clients, contracts, revenue band, crew
  • The reason it ended, said once, in one line, in the cover letter

We turn the business into a career record

Most self-employed resumes describe the business and hope. Hiring managers and procurement officers hire on evidence. We replace the lines they skim past with lines that prove something.

Whether you call it a self-employed resume, a business owner resume or a contractor resume, the answer is the same document: the business as a job with a title, dates, a scope and numbers, written for the reader in front of you.

Meet Your Resume Writer

Elite Resume Writer is a writer-led studio, not an anonymous content farm. Your resume is written under one roof by a small team of certified writers, led by founder Khaqan Chaudhry, the same Khaqan clients thank by name in the reviews above. He runs this business himself, so he has sat on both sides of the table you are describing. The same team writes your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile together, so every document tells the same story and nothing contradicts.

“I’ve sat on the other side of the hiring desk. I know exactly what makes a recruiter stop scrolling.”

Recruiters and procurement officers who look you up before they call, and find “Owner at” with a logo and 40 connections unless it is rewritten.

The Craft

What Goes Into a Self-Employed Resume That Gets Read

Whichever direction you are going, our self-employed resume writers build it the same way: the structure below, the Canadian conventions we write to, and none of the mistakes that get an owner’s resume set aside. It is how our self-employed resume writing services work in every province.

What each part of a self-employed resume has to do

  1. 01

    The Header and Profile

Name, city, phone, email and LinkedIn, then a title that matches the target rather than “Owner”, and two lines that say what you did, for whom, at what scale, and what you are applying for.

  2. 02

    The Business as a Role

Business name, city and dates, one line on what it did and for whom, then bullets that open with what you did and close with a number: clients, contracts, revenue band, team, retention.

  3. 03

Contracts and Clients in One Section

Each engagement as a mini-role: client type, dates, scope and result, with the confidential ones described by sector and size.

  4. 04

    Skills, Tools and Tickets

The software, certifications, licences, safety tickets and clearances the posting or the bid names, in its words, where the screen and the reader both find them.

The Canadian self-employed resume conventions we write to

Title

A real title

Owner and Lead Electrician, Principal Consultant, Independent Contractor. Never a bare “Self-employed” and never CEO of a company of one.

Named

The business named and dated

The business name, the city and the years, with sole proprietorship or Inc. where it helps the reader place it.

Recent

Reverse chronological

Most recent work first, the business in its place in the timeline, dates aligned, no unexplained years.

Numbers

Numbers at the owner’s scale

A $400,000 book of business is a number and “grew the business” is not. Clients, contracts, crew, retention, project values.

Type

Clients by type when confidential

A regional grocery chain, two municipalities, a national carrier. The reader learns the scale without a name you cannot give.

2 pg

Two pages at most

Job Bank caps everyone at two, and a business record that runs longer is written as recent work in detail and earlier years in one block.

No

No photo, no age, no SIN

Job Bank: a photo is not the norm in Canada and can lower your chances. No age, no SIN, no business number.

Letter

The reason it ended, once

In the cover letter, in one line, never in the resume. The resume states dates and results and lets the letter do the explaining.

The mistakes your self-employed resume will not make

The mistakeWhat we seeWhat yours does
1

The CEO of one

“Chief Executive Officer” on a company with no staff, which invites the flight-risk question before the first bullet.
Yours carries the title you held and the title the job needs, and lets the numbers say how big it was.
2

The missing years

The business left off entirely because you did not know how to list it, so the resume reads as a five-year gap.
Yours lists the business as a dated role, so the years read as a career.
3

The brochure

Your website’s marketing paragraph in place of what you actually did, with no number anywhere on the page.
Yours opens every line with what you did and closes it on a result.
4

The blank client list

“Clients: confidential” with no sector, no size and no result, which reads as no clients at all.
Yours names clients by type and scale, so the reader learns what you handled without a name you cannot give.
5

The everything list

Every contract since 2009 as its own job, each with three lines, across four pages.
Yours puts the contracts in one section and keeps the recent ones in detail.
6

The open door

The business shown as “to present” when you have closed it, which reads as one foot still out the door.
Yours closes the dates and says once, in the cover letter, why you are choosing this role.
Whichever direction you are going, your self-employed resume leads with the evidence that reader is looking for.

FAQ

Self-Employed Resume Writing Service
Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our self-employed resume writing service

Our self-employed resume writing starts at $99 with the Essential package. The Premium package ($129) adds a cover letter and the Elite package ($199) adds the LinkedIn profile as well, and every package carries the 60-day interview guarantee with a full refund and a free rewrite. It is the same price every client pays, whether you ran a one-person practice or a company with a crew. Several services charge $300 to $900 for the same documents, and the ones written for self-employed clients offer a rewrite at best, never a refund. Compare the three on our packages and prices page.
If your resume says “Owner” with no title an employer recognizes, describes the business in the words of your website, or leaves the years out because you did not know how to list them, usually yes. An employer reading a self-employed resume is asking three questions, what you did, why it ended and whether you will stay, and a resume that answers none of them is set aside in the 30 seconds Job Bank says a resume gets. We write the years as a career record, to the posting you send us, in 2 to 3 business days, and the 60-day guarantee keeps the risk on our side. The free resume review is the way to find out what yours says today.
As a job, with a title, dates, a scope and numbers. We list the business by name with the city and the years, give you the title you actually held (Owner and Lead Electrician, Principal Consultant, Independent Contractor), open with one line on what the business did and for whom, then write bullets that close on a number: clients served, contracts won, revenue band, team size, retention. Contracts and client engagements go in one section, each with a client type, dates, scope and a result, so a string of engagements reads as one record. A bare “Self-employed” with a date range is the one thing we never leave on the page.
The business name, with a title. “Freelance” and “self-employed” describe a tax status, not a job, and an applicant tracking system cannot match either one to a posting. We write the entry the way the employer will read it: the name of the business, sole proprietorship or corporation where it helps the reader, the title you used, and the work. “Freelance” stays only in fields where clients use the word, such as design, writing and film, and even there it sits beside a real title. If you never named the business, the practice carries your own name, which is how most sole proprietors already operate.
On the resume, with dates and results, and nowhere else. The entry shows when the business ran and what it achieved; it does not explain why it ended, because a resume that argues invites questions a cover letter can answer in one line. The cover letter gives the reason once, plainly, and moves on to what you bring to this job. Closing a business is ordinary in Canada: about 74,500 small businesses exit in an average year, and about a third of new businesses are gone within five years (ISED, Key Small Business Statistics 2025). What an employer wants to see is that you ran it properly and that you are choosing this role, not fleeing the last one.
Some will assume it, which is why the resume has to answer it before the interview does. We give you a title that matches the job rather than the business, so the reader sees a fit instead of a founder; we name the collaborative work, the clients you reported to, the crews and partners you managed and the deadlines you met for someone else; and we put the steady-work signals up front: long client relationships, repeat contracts, retention rates. The cover letter says in one sentence why you want to be on a team again. The interview question will still come, and our interview coaching rehearses it, but the resume gets you into the room.
No, and the resume should not apologize for it. Ten or twenty years of running a business is a senior record: hiring, pricing, delivery, cash flow and clients kept through downturns. We write the last five years in detail, the way any recent role would be written, and fold the earlier years into one dated block with the scale shown, so the reader sees growth rather than a wall of text. The employment before the business gets one or two lines each. The result is a two-page resume with recent work first, which is what Job Bank asks of every Canadian job seeker.
Yes. A bid resume follows the key-personnel format the proposal asks for: your role on the project, relevant projects with values and dates, certifications, and client references by type. Vendor onboarding and procurement portals, from CanadaBuys and MERX to a provincial vendor of record arrangement, want the same facts in a form that fits their fields. Staffing firms that place contractors want a resume their database can parse, an availability line and a clear answer on whether you work incorporated or on a T4. For consulting and agency rosters we add a one-page bio that matches the resume. Send us the RFP or the roster form and we write to it, with a 24-hour rush when the bid closes this week.
Yes. Recruiters and procurement officers look you up before they call, and a profile that says “Owner at” with a logo and 40 connections tells them nothing; the Elite package includes a headline that matches your target, an About section that reads like the resume, and experience entries for the business and its contracts. The cover letter is the one place to say why the business ended and why you will stay, in two sentences, and for a bid it becomes the proposal cover letter; the Premium package includes it. See our cover letter writing service and LinkedIn optimization pages for the details.
It can draft one, and employers can tell. AI calls everyone a results-driven entrepreneur, skips the numbers because it does not know them, and cannot ask what your business did for whom. Some employers run detectors on applications, and a resume that reads like a template gets the same treatment as one. Our writers interview you for the contracts, the clients and the figures, write the document in your voice and format it for the software that screens it.
