If your resume opens with an objective statement, lists duties with no numbers, leaves off your best project or uses a two-column template the co-op portal cannot parse, usually yes. Co-op postings and new grad programs draw hundreds of applications and close within days, and the screen is done by software and a coordinator with a minute per file. Count what you have already done. Co-op terms, internships, campus and part-time jobs, volunteering, clubs, class projects, labs and capstones are all experience to an employer if they are written as results: what you did, for whom, and the number that proves it. Put education first, with the courses and projects that match the posting, then the jobs, then projects and skills. Drop the objective statement, the photo and the high school detail, and keep it to one page.
A two-line profile that says your program, your year and what you are applying for; education with your school, program, expected graduation, relevant courses and awards; every co-op term, internship, campus and part-time job with a result attached; projects, volunteering and the clubs or teams you ran; then skills, in the words the posting uses, and the certifications behind them. Leave out the objective statement, the photo, your date of birth, your SIN, references and a hobbies list.
One page until you have a co-op term or two and a year of full-time work behind you, and never more than two. Job Bank tells every Canadian job seeker to keep it to two pages, and a coordinator reading two hundred co-op applications does not turn to page two. The length is not the problem most students have; the order is. Education first, then experience, then projects and skills, with the strongest evidence for this posting in the top third of the page.
Put the GPA on if it helps you: 3.5 and above on a 4.0 scale, or 80% and above, and any time the posting asks for it. Leave it off otherwise, and never round it up. List the four to six courses that match the posting, not the whole transcript, and name the project, lab or case from each that proves you can do the work. Once you have a year of full-time experience, the courses come off and the GPA usually follows.
As a job, not as a course. List each work term under Experience with the employer, your title, the city and the dates, then two to four lines that say what you did and what changed: the tool you built, the process you improved, the number that moved. Write “Co-op” or “Work Term” in the title if the portal expects to see it. A co-op term with results beats a retail job with duties, so it goes above the retail job even when the retail job is more recent.
Yes, and each one is written to its screen. Co-op portals want a one-column resume with standard headings and, usually, a cover letter. Federal internships through FSWEP and Canada Summer Jobs postings screen on stated criteria. The bank, Big Four and tech new grad programs open in September, close within weeks and run every application through an applicant tracking system before a person reads it.
