Public administration anchors the market. The Manitoba core public service had 12,566 active employees at March 31, 2025, and the Crown head offices are here: Manitoba Hydro with more than 5,000 people in 80 career streams, MPI with nearly 2,000 employees, and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. Health care is the other anchor. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and its operating entities employ approximately 18,000 people, more than 8,000 of them at Health Sciences Centre, and St. Boniface Hospital adds over 4,000. Around them sit the City of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba with 10,457 staff, the University of Winnipeg and RRC Polytech, a financial services sector of more than 20,000 workers at Canada Life, IG Wealth Management, Wawanesa and the credit unions, 34 aerospace companies led by Boeing Winnipeg with about 1,500 employees, Magellan and StandardAero, the New Flyer and Motor Coach Industries bus plants, Richardson International, Canada Goose, CN’s Symington Yard and Transcona shops, the carriers of CentrePort, and a federal presence that includes the National Microbiology Laboratory, the Royal Canadian Mint and 17 Wing.
